IN THE NAME OF A ROSE

It took me more than a week to recover from my last experience with children and the travel to the Rhodope Mountains. The memories are strong and don't fade away.

If you have read my last year's post about  Shiroka Luka, then you already have an impression of that  magical small villige. This year I attended the Summer Theatre Academy for Children at risk only fot three days. I didn't intend to take pics, for I have done it before. But... I was tempted again to catch the unique atmosphere of this charming place!

This year's project theme was "The Little Prince".

Dance, Masks, Puppets, Music - all the workshops created a performance about the Little Prince's travel in space, trying to understand the real meaning of friendship and love.

After the hard work and the general rehearsal, the day of the final performance came!

This year my whole family was involved in the project. My husband led a workshop for social workers on how to use creative writing and improvised puppets in their work with children at risk. Our son took part as a volunteer in the international visual artists' team. And I was coaching the Puppet workshop leader.:))

The photos of the performance and the river are taken by my son.:)

N.B. If you are interested in the project, you can see more photos and videos, taken throughout the years HERE. Enjoy! https://www.facebook.com/pages/Shiroka-Luka-Summer-Theatre-School-for-children-at-risk/100523026665367

  1. There's nothing quite like working on projects with your whole family. We've managed to do it a few times (without killing each other) and these are some of the best memories I have.

Beautiful photos! The stonework in the village is wonderful. So warm and inviting. Of course you had to take them. :)

    1. So you know what it is like to work with your family!:) It happens quite often to us - the three or the two of us to be together in a project. I'm happy everytime when our son participates, because thus he develops different creative skills, connected with theatre, puppetry, music. His choice to attend the scenographer's atelie and to work for the final performance, was a natural consequence of all this. Besides he's a big person now who can take responsibilities.:)

  2. Greetings Rossicheeka :) Once again you prove a wonderful ambassador and tourist promoter for your country :) Ahh I was smiling when I looke at these, the joy of children being lost in their imagination, so sad that some of us lose it, and those children's drawings, exquisite, you can see the concentration nd innocence that went into to them, It gives so much energy, hugs from oz :)

    1. Yes, I think that this energy helps me in a way in difficult moments. And because of our contact with children, we will remain "forever young", even with white hair and slow steps...:)
Tourist promoter is my proffesion "in shadow", you helped me once to realize that! :D But what to do when I want to make you feel the atmosphere of such incredible places like this small mountain village?:))
Thanks for the interest! I believe that every chid wears some talent!

    1. I agree about the project, Charlotte. If you visit its Facebook page and scroll thrtough the photos, you'll get a clear idea of the whole. This was its 11th edition! Oranized by a young Bulgarian theatre director, with the support and participation of her also young colleagues.I've taken part just four times... By the way, the main sponsor is an Englishman!:))

  5. Dear R. the first illustration of a child that you show here has left me speechless.
then again I am left without words to see what a good photographer, you are
and once again I am left speechless, seeing that your work is shared for your husband and your son, and always, always, always, there is an element that is present: joy
and obviously, uniting all this, surrounding it: love, without which nothing that you show to us, it could be done.
I wish you a good weekend to you and your wonderful family :)

    1. My dear friend, there's really so much joy and amusement in our work! It's so pleasant when our efforrts, aims and hopes are awarded with smiles, hugs, kisses...
The first painting is fantastic, I'm not sure whether it's not a team work - I will ask.
Lovely weekend for you, too!:) Did the winter finish?

  6. Dear Rossichka, everything that you've shown and told us is so positive and beautiful...and perhaps even a little magical. What happiness and creativity can come from working together, encouraging each other!

I am so glad that you did take all the photographs, allowing so many of us in faraway places to learn about what is going on in other neighborhoods. The children are fabulously creative!

    1. Positive... Through the comments to this post I realize lots of things. Yes, all the adults - artists, students, volunteers, trainees, sponsors, guests, friends, members of families from Bulgaria, Holland, England, Germany, Kenya were POSITIVE! It's a big responsibiity (and not easy at all!) to help the so called "children at risk" express their creativity. And every summer we gather all there to encourage them! There're kids who have participated in the project for several years now and their development is remarkable!
Thank you for your sincere interest, Frances! You always succeed to put in the best way your thoughts and to encourage me in what I am doing, thanks again!:))

    1. Thank you! It's high in the Rhodope Mountains, the air is sweet and chilly, even when it's summer. It's very picturesque and attracts lots of tourists. Besides, it's very close to one of our famous ski resorts - Pamporovo.

  8. Oh my word! How did that girl stay up on her stilts?! Rossichka, what a wonderful project you are involved in. It must be hard work but also very rewarding. I loved seeing all your photos of such a pretty village and of course seeing the children having fun too.

  9. There was one more girl on stilts - they were welcoming the public. I could never do such a thing - I will fall down immediately, I'm scared at the thought to be so high, not to mention walking on stilts!:)
This year I was just intellectually involved for a short time, but everyone there (including my family) worked really hard!

    2. Hi, I'm back. I can't sleep :( Everything is OK, but some nights I lie awake and get itchy and have to get up. So nice that I can visit you!!!
I think it's marvellous what you and your crew achieve with the children! Le petit prince is a beautiful story, the puppet is so sweet and the costums are amazing. You worked hard! How much time you had for preparing the show? And the open air stage, the sunny weather... just perfect.
I see the Dutch girl is still with you.
And now a little bit of vacation for you, I hope. Or is the next group of children already waiting for you? Byebye, Hedie

    3. I'm a freelance puppet theatre director, so I organize my work and have lots of time to spend at home. There are family reasons that stop me from going somewhere on a holiday, but I take my time to have a rest when I can...
Yes, the Dutch girl managed perfectly well - we are so happy with my husband that we know her and worked with her! These days she's leaving Bulgaria after having lots of experiences and meeting friends, sincere ones.
Everything was ready for two weeks plus a week before to know each other, to play games, to prepare for the event, to achieve skills in different arts. I was just coaching the PUPPETS "online" and at the end of the project, that's why I went there. I'm happy the Little Prince and the Fox turned out to be such marvellous puppets - a friend of ours made them, she's a professional puppet-constructor and we met several times to discuss how they should look like. The woman behind the Little Prince is a famous Bugarian puppeteer and actress - she was helping the children!
I'm sorry, Hedwig, that you cannot sleep sometimes. Maybe you should change something to get out of the routine...
      Hugs from hot, hot Bulgaria!xxx
