LITTLE PUPPETEERS

On the occasion of the World Theatre Day our theatre group "Kamila" decided to run a shadow puppet workshop.
We prepared the materials and the technical equipment.
The participants cut the silhouettes from cardboard and attached them to curved drinking straws, which if bent under 90 degrees, became invisible.
Then they had two opportunities to try the shadows - behind a shadow box and behind a screen.

Some of the kids created their own characters...

The others used the templates, we had made...

All of them had  fun and enjoyed the magic...

Even stories were born...

The screen was a "serious" thing...  There were some professional rules to be followed, such as not to stand in front of the light source, to hold the silhouette properly and to make place for the other puppeteers.:)

The kids did their best and were SO happy! Even some of the parents got involved as partners.:)

N.B. Please, pay attention to the butterfly, its shadow is perfect - the holder is invisible!

I believe the shadow performances will continue at home, in the evenings, when the lamps are switched on.;)

  1. What adorable characters! Especially love that thin cat and big bird... Even more than usual, after reading your post I feel like trying this out myself. I have always been fascinated by the magic of shadow puppetry. The detailed shadow puppet figures I saw in China were just incredible and I still regret I didn't buy one for myself when I got a chance.

    1. The cat and the bird were made by a 10-year old girl, who plays the violin and loves to draw.:)Oh, yes, you could try to make some shadows on the wall - it's so funny!(When it's sunny and when it gets dark.) I have puppetry books with Chinese shadow puppets and I know they are "unique au monde", but I suppose it's much more exciting to see a real one! Maybe you'll have another chance to go and buy...:)

  3. Rossichka, this post is full of joy and magic! I am imagining the children's wonder at being able to tell a story with shadow and light. Perhaps they will all now notice shadows cast by sunlight...tree branches, their very own shadows...shorter or longer depending on the sunlight...and so much more.

You have now launched some future puppeteers and artists! Please do take a bow! xo

    1. I'm blushing, thank you! We were very pleased with the result - the children were like hypnotized, especially the bigger ones! Who knows, maybe these shadow puppets will be the impulse for someone's creative future?...:)

    1. We showed them a new world, that can be "awaken" by light and shadows. Next time we'll make just a few templates, in order to provoke the kids' imagination in creating characters.
      Merci beaucoup, Roger!

    1. Actually, it's difficult to manipulate shadow puppets. The lighting is the main "actor" and there're lots of "know-hows", that everyone discovers for himself. I was lucky to participate in a shadow performance with hands, while studying at the National Academy for Theatre and Cinema Art.
      Thanks for stopping by!:)

  8. Beautiful work, Rossichka!. I wonder: What is most rewarding for your heart? The applause, or the smile of a child? Thank you for your beautiful comment!!! and have a nice week!!!! :)

    1. Hmmm, thanks for the question, Roberto! I choose the smile!
Today, we had a very special event with/for children - the presentation of a "real" book with children's literary works and drawings that was just published. EVERYONE smiled... There were applauses and tears out of joy... We gathered the best works of 27 children that participated in my husband's groups for creative writing. A lot of people, colleagues and friends, took part in this wonderful initiative to make a dream come true. Our hearts are overflowed with joy now...:))
      Have a nice week, too!

  9. The looks on the children's faces is my favorite part. It looks as though they were quite serious in their having fun, intrigued as well. Such a lovely thing to do.

    1. Yes, they were attracted by the shadows, but deeply involved in the magical process,as well. I have many photos of beautiful children's faces from our workshops, but don't share them here in the name of privacy. Thanks for stopping by!
