TO ANDERSEN WITH LOVE!

  2.04.1805 - 4.08.1875

Тhose of you who've been following my blog since last year, know how much I love Andersen! If you've missed my first post about him - here it is .
And here're several photos from the puppet performances, created upon two of his fairytales, that I dramatized and put on stage.

"The Ugly Duckling" - 1998

"The Steadfast Tin Soldier" - 2010

I've been waiting for 2nd of April with an excitement! I can't explain it, but I feel Andersen  very close, I really wish I was among those (lucky ones!) who had known him!! I'm still hoping to fulfil my dream to learn Danish, so that I could read Andersen in original, using the vocabulary, of course!:) During the last 100 years Andersen has been translated in Bulgarian from Russian and English, as far as I know. We have just one translation of his tales, made from Danish - in 2005...

This little book is very precious to me. There lies the autograph of Lyudmila Braude - the Russian researcher of Andersen's life and works, an author of his biography and a profound connoisseur of the Scandinavian literature for children. I had the luck to meet her at the IVth International Conference "Hans Christian Andersen between children's literature and adult literature", that was held in Odense on the occasion of the writer's bicentenary in 2005.

From Hans Christian Andersen's museum in Odense, I bought Jackie Wullschlager's biography "Hans Christian Andersen - The Life of a Storyteller".

As you may know, Andersen is famous for his papercuttings, too - unique, complicated, with several main elements - swans, ballerinas, butterflies, mill-men, umbrellas... These ones are from the collection, kept in HCAndersen's Museum in Odense. (I was happy to see it!)

Aren't they marvellous?!

"Together" in Odense...:)

Today our Family Theatre Group had a performance, that included the reading of "Thumbelina"...

... while a young student from the city's High School of  Arts created an illustration in front of the eyes of the audience. But I will write about our theatre Saturdays in another post...

HAVE A LOVELY SUNDAY, ALL OF YOU!

P.S. Dear friends, I am preparing a post, entitled "To Illustrate Andersen's fairytales..." I will be more than happy if you find your old Andersen's books with fairytales and send me by e-mail several photos of the illustrations you like most plus the name of the illustrator, his nationality and the year when the book was published. I think this exploring journey of mine may turn into an exciting experience for all of us. THANK YOU!  And... tell me, please, which is your favourite fairytale, written by Andersen?

  1. Hello Rossi. I hope you're well. :)

It's wonderful to see you writing about Andersen, especially because I know how much you love him. His work has captured so many hearts, so thank you for sharing more about him. Oh, and I LOVE the picture of you and him in Odense! :)

Anyway, I'm sorry for not visiting much lately... I've had some 'adjustments' to make recently. oxx

  2. Hello, my dear friend! You were silent for quite a long time, I missed you, that's why I'm so glad to find a message from you!
Oh, yes, Andersen, my dear Andersen!!... These days in the evenings I read some materials about him, that are so interesting and I'm sorry I don't have enough free time...
I'll visit your blog tonight - I saw you have a new post!
    Take care and be happy!xx

  3. I am definitely a fan of his stories too Rossichka. Such a talented man. I would have loved to have met him too. We owe him such a lot. Where would generations of children be without his influence. I didn't know that he did those amazing papercuts though. They look quite tricky.

Lovely picture of you with his statue.

  4. Wow, I had no idea Anderson created papercuts and they are such exquisitely detailed. I think the Ugly Duckling and Thumbelina were my first introduction to his work and were such strong favourites through my childhood. I always wondered how magical it would be to be so tiny and definitely identified with the duckling, haha :D

Thank you for your lovely and thoughtful words on my blog. Your comments are always so welcome and get right to the heart of what I'm trying to say :D

  5. Yes, Cathy, Andersen has influenced us all more or less... Just think in how many languages his fairy tales have been translated! I saw in his museum the collection of some of these books from all over the world - a big room, with a lot of shelves... Impressive!
And his paprecuts - oh, they are fantastic!
    Thanks for commenting!:)

  6. so lovely to hear of your passion for this man and his arts, his beautiful arts. How is your Danish coming?

  7. Dear Kimberley, I wonder why so many people do not know about Andersen's talent for papercutting (including me up till several years ago)! They are beautiful and not simple at all! Just imagine that he was cutting, without drawing in advance! He was an artistic person - his voice was soprano in his teens; I saw some of the sketches he drew during his long travels... A talented man of a high quality!
"Thumbelina" and "The Ugly Duckling" are among my favourites, too. But I was most impressed as a child by "Little Ida's Flowers" and "The Wild Swans"... Maybe one day I will write more about his fairytales in a special post!
It's a pleasure for me to visit your blog - I admire your paintings! I'm happy to hear that I understand you in a way!:) Very best wishes and hugs!

  8. I haven't begun learning it yet, Tammie! There're no notebooks in the bookshops, but still I found a very short Grammar. Danish is not an easy language. One cannot learn its pronunciation, without listening, so the best opportunity is to follow an online-course. And I could do it when (and if) I have a period, free of my habitual engagements, because I'll need time for studying.:)

  10. Oh, I'm overjoyed to hear this!xx
I'm glad I've done something little in honouring of his life which, by the way, was exciting, but very hard at times! Which is your favourite fairy tale of his?

  11. Oh my gosh! I have goosebumps reading this. Oh I love Hans Christian Andersen. I grew up reading him, which is very interesting experience because I had to compare his writings to my native literature and English literature. I think I really did not care about the differences or similarities, I just loved the stories and Andersen was the best of them all!

Rossichka, every time I come here, I want to write a comment but end up not doing it. You know why? Your paper cuttings remind me of my mother and I start longing for her. I can still see my mother cutting paper and then like magic open up an image of children or a house, animal...she used brown paper bags or newspaper. She taught me how to cut paper. For a while our house was filled with paper cuttings much to the dismay of my older sisters who had to clean up. I used my mother's very sharp scissors that my father manually honed in an electric honing wheel.

Sometimes I just look at your paper cuttings and sigh, in a wonderful way. I should really comment. I read everyone of your articles because I follow you and I see it on my reader. I must come here and say hello often.

So cool that you got to dramatize Andersen's plays.

Thank you for your kind comments on my blog.

    Have a beautiful day.

    Tsup!

  14. Dear Ces,
When we write our posts we want to share with others something from our world and life, without knowing or slightly suggesting how our words will reflect upon our readers. We influence each other in many ways, mostly pleasant, inspiring and beautiful... That's why now I am so excited that you are among those, who love Andersen ever since childhood (what's your favourite fairy tale?) and that my papercuttings touch the precious memories of your Mum! I find your idea of drawing her making papercuts to entertain you, her children, wonderful! It'll bring perhaps new memories, connected with her...
Thanks for the nice words about my blog! Don't apologize for not commenting regularly - I'm glad whenever I read something from you!
By the way, the last several evenings I spent in cutting figures from brown paper - they use it for wrapping in the shops here - and pretty soon I'll post my pictures!:)

  15. The pleasure is mine, Afi! If he only knew how many people, including talented artists like you and all who commented to this post, love him!... Which are your favourite Andersen's fairy tales? Do you keep a book from your childhood (in Arabian)? It'll be very interesting to see the illustrations there. I'm gathering materials for a post about "To Illustrate Andersen's fairytales...". If you find some illustrations, please, send them to my e-mail! I'll write a P.S. to my post, asking for the same thing right now. This idea has just come to my mind - to use as examples the books of my blogging friends, not just those that I have! Thank you!:)

  18. Hi, Andrew! Nice to hear your voice again - don't worry about your absence, I'm glad whenever you pass here!:) I'm very guilty, dear friend, for not sending the gift on time, but you will receive it, I assure you plus a bonus for an excuse!!!.........
I'm glad you like the puppets, they are work of one of the most talented Bulgarian puppet theatre scenographers - Svila Velichkova. A lady with whom we work together for 20 years now! She's a very good drama theatre costume designer, too and has awards in Bulgaria and abroad.
Oh, "The Little Matchgirl" - quite a sad story, it's interesting how you "translate " it.
hanks, I try to take care of myself, I do, but it's difficult, because I have troubles...
Wishing you ALL THE BEST! Sunny, spring greetings!:)))))

  19. Hola, Bea! Yes, puppet theatre is so diverse, there're different systems of puppets and ways of using them, endless themes to choose for a play and the contact with the children's audience is something that can't be compared to anything else! You can see some photos from my other puppet shows under the label "puppet theatre"!:)
Bulgarian is close to Russian if we have in mind some words that are the same or nearly similar in pronunciation or writing. And, mentioning the writing - we use one and the same alphabet - the Cyrillic alphabet, created in 9th century thanks to the Bulgarian brothers Saints Cyril and Methodius. It's difficult for me to explain everything, so if you are interested, you can read more here - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyrillic_alphabet
By the way, Cyrillic is the third official alphabet of the European Union. A lot of nations, mainly Slavic, write and read in it!

I've studied at the University one year German (but we learned nearly nothing)and one year Italian (I can read and understand a little, but have never spoken it). I even attended a course for learning Czech language for a month and I know the names of the months now.:))) Then I was studying puppet theatre directing and wanted to learn the language in order to read professional literature, because the Czech puppet theatre has very long traditions! But... I got sick and missed some lessons, so I had to quit.:(( I dream to learn a little bit Danish... I think I could learn every language if I have a reason to!

Dear Patricia, I think that your wonderful, loving mother knew perfectly well what fairytales to choose to for you to say "good night" (among them Andersen's, of course!) and maybe she re-writed them, following your behaviour and needs at the moment, as well as her imagination and wish to create something beautiful! What an exciting memory!...

I read the post about "The Snow Queen" - what a marvellous show! I'm very, very much impressed indeed! You all, the adults, have done a great job and have created for all these children a memory for a lifetime! The costume of the Princess is really great!:)

It wasn't easy to dramatize and put on stage "The Steadfast Tin Soldier" - there is so much beneath the surface in this fairy tale...
I don't know Paul Durand - I'll read about him in Internet.

I've enjoyed showing them where I grew up, which was actually a pretty harsh and poor place, which was why the Rock gardens were so special, an oasis. They deserve a bit of fun now to distract them from future difficulties.

I'm sure you'll manage with the challenges! You must take care of all of you, especially the children and you reacted so bravely! I wish you to feel well in Mexico and to addapt to your new life soon (have you lived there before?) Let all your dreams come true! You'll need faith, hope, love and strength!
